For the Hindus, by the Hindus

Retrieve. Restore. Rejuvenate.

Our goal is to restore temple sanctity, divinity and practices — and to empower the community to manage the temples as they have been, for several centuries.

01 / Our Goal

A thousand-year tradition, in our care

For over one thousand years our lives have centered around temples. The emperors and kings of yore, wealthy men, and the man on the street donated huge resources so that worship, learning, art and community would have a sanctified home.

  • Restore the sanctity of our temples
  • Restore and preserve the wealth of our temples
  • Restore the practices and traditions of our temples
02 / The Six Sacred Roles

Six core functions, performed faithfully

01

Worship per āgama śāstras

Conducted in accordance with the agama shastras and the unique traditions of each temple.

02

Anna dhānam

Offering food to devotees and the needy as an integral part of temple service.

03

Veda pāṭhaśālā

Schools that keep the recitation and study of the Vedas a living practice.

04

Goshālās

Care of cows in the traditional manner, woven into the life of the temple.

05

Livelihood for sevaks

Dignified support for priests, archakas and the many sevaks who keep the temple alive.

06

Chatrams for pilgrims

Rest and shelter for worshippers and pilgrims, as was provided for centuries.

03 / What is at stake

Major transgressions

What has been preserved and tastefully embellished over centuries is now being damaged by careless administration. Ancient granite pillars are dismantled and replaced by concrete. Whole floors of mandapams are torn up. Walls with priceless inscriptions are plastered over.

Temple lamps are unlit. Sanctums are entered by those without the training to conduct pooja. Maniyam lands, donated for the remuneration of archakas and kurukkals, have been usurped.

We document, we publish, and where necessary we go to court — so that what was built by generations is not lost to indifference.

HR & CE: Rogue Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu

It is a great irony that a secular Government should deeply embroil itself in the administration of Hindu temples — administering, or rather mal-administering, more than 36,000 of them.
